Targeted Heat Therapy Improves Outcomes for Soft Tissue Sarcoma (9/30/2009) A new technique called regional hyperthermia (RHT) makes chemotherapy more effective and improves outcomes in patients with soft tissue sarcoma, according to the results of a study presented on September 22, 2009 at Europe’s largest cancer congress, ECCO 15-ESMO 34, in Berlin.
Gleevec® Reduces Risk of Recurrence After Surgery for Localized Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (3/27/2009) Among patients with localized gastrointestinal stromal tumors, adjuvant (post-surgery) treatment with the targeted therapy Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate) reduces the risk of cancer recurrence. These results were published in The Lancet.
Gleevec® Approved for Adjuvant Treatment of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (12/31/2008) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expanded the approval of Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate) to include the adjuvant (post-surgery) treatment of Kit-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumors in adults.
Differences in IMRT Radiation Doses May Complicate Study Results in Sarcomas (4/9/2008) Differences between the prescribed dose of radiation in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and the dose that’s actually delivered may make comparison studies in sarcomas difficult to interpret. These findings were reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
PET Scan More Accurate Predictor of Treatment Response for Soft Tissue Sarcomas (2/8/2008) Positron emission tomography (PET) scans were found to be significantly more accurate than standard methods in judging response to first-line treatment for high-grade soft tissue sarcomas. These results were reported in Clinical Cancer Research.
